ANNOTATED LIST OF THE REPTILES OF THE TRASLASIERRA NATIONAL PARK (CÓRDOBA, ARGENTINA)

Abstract

The Traslasierra National Park (TNP) is located in the west of the province of Córdoba, comprising an area of 44 019 ha. It extends from the watershed of the Sierras de Pocho, to the east, and to the interprovincial limit with La Rioja to the west. It includes forests and scrublands of the Chaco Serrano, extensive xeric plain forests, and salty lowlands and halophytic shrubs from the southern end of the Great Central Salinas. The vertebrates that inhabit the Park are typical of the arid Chaco, including populations of endangered species. Notwithstanding this fact, to date there is no formal and complete survey of the Park's herpetofauna. The objective of this work is to present an annotated list of all the reptiles confirmed in this protected area, and a second list of species likely to be part of the catalogue, still not found in the Park but with records in neighboring sectors with similar physiognomy to it. The species´ records come from observations by the first author and personnel of the TNP performing daily surveillance tasks in the Park, as well as former field work in the area by ourselves. Our results confirm the presence of 26 species and subspecies, corresponding to 35.6 % of the 73 native reptiles of the province of Córdoba. Five of them are Threatened or Vulnerable: Chelonoidis chilensis, Stenocercus doellojuradoi, Tropidurus spinulosus, Boa constrictor occidentalis and Epicrates alvarezi, and are protected by the TNP. The leptotyphlopid snake Rena unguirostris, although present in 12 provinces, would be protected only in this unit of the National Park System of Argentina. Of the 18 species to be confirmed in the Park, seven of them are highly probable because they are present in the Chancaní Provincial Park and Natural Forest Reserve, 10 km south of the Park.
