Abstract

We report the first documented case of reverse crypsis behavior in Crotalus triseriatus (Wagler, 1830) and the third in viperid snakes. This behavior involves movements of the head and anterior portion of the body, alternating projection and retraction during forward movement. We suggest that this behavior is common in rattlesnakes that share habitat and ecology, since, including the present record, reverse crypsis has been reported in two independent evolutionary lineages. We observed this behavior in Tlalpan, Mexico City, Mexico.
