Abstract

This work summarizes a conference I gave on April 28, 2023 at the Facultad de Biología of the Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa in commemoration of International Amphibian Day. The presentation was intended to familiarize students with historical and current advances in the study of the herpetofauna of Sinaloa, and motivate them to explore this field, recognizing opportunities to contribute in areas with limited information. The document addresses the history of scientific field exploration and the need for a herpetological collection in Sinaloa. The lack of this collection has limited the understanding of the taxonomic diversity of amphibians and reptiles in the region, affecting both systematics and taxonomy studies and the academic development of local herpetologists. Researchers are encouraged to collaborate and promote the creation of herpetological collections, as well as to follow good practices in scientific collection.

Author Biography

Héctor Alexis Castro Bastidas, Centro de Estudios "Justo Sierra" (CEJUS)

I am a biologist graduated from the Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa and my area of specialty is zoology. My topics of interest are Herpetology, Ecology, Geographic Information Systems and Conservation. I am currently a master's student at the Centro de Estudios "Justo Sierra" (CEJUS) studying how the genetic structure of populations is modified by dispersal processes. I am also involved in outreach and exploration activities to better understand the amphibian communities of the state of Sinaloa in northwestern Mexico. In addition to my research interests, I enjoy nature, going to the movies, reading and listening to music.
